Turtle Cake

I found this recipe on the internet back in 2004. I made the cake for a cookout that I was attending and the cake was all eaten up before the meat was served. Yeah, it's that good!

Ingredients:

  • 1 box german chocolate cake mix + ingredients to prepare
  • 1 bag (14 ounce) caramels
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • 2 cups roasted salted peanuts chopped
  • 1 cup semi-sweet mini chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350F.
  2. Mix cake as directed on box.
  3. Pour 1/2 of the prepared batter into a lightly greased and floured 9x13 inch glass baking pan.
  4. Bake in preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  5. In medium saucepan, melt caramels, evaporated milk and butter over medium low heat, stirring often.
  6. Bring to a slow boil and remove from heat.
  7. Pour over baked cake.
  8. Sprinkle crushed nuts and chocolate chips over caramel mixture.
  9. Pour and spread the rest of the cake batter on top of the chocolate chips and nuts.
  10. Spread evenly to cover.
  11. Bake for an additional 20 minutes.
  12. Cool cake in pan on wire rack for 35 minutes.
  13. May drizzle with chocolate sauce or sprinkle with powdered sugar if desired.
  14. Serve warm and refrigerate unused portions.

Yes Nancy the picture is actually Turtle Cake. The recipe calls to make it in a 9×13 pan, however since it is just me I usually make a smaller version or more than one in a smaller pan so I can give them away. The picture is actually a cake made in a 4″ springform pan, the recipe made 4 and I gave the other 3 away. The “white stuff” is actually crushed peanuts, but since the picture is such a close up, they do look white. Thank you so much for stopping by The Hungry Hoarder and I hope you enjoy the recipes you find here.
