Philly Cheese Steak Sandwich

I’m sure I got this recipe from somewhere but can not remember where. I can’t come up with something this good all by myself.

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil divided
  • 3 tablespoons butter divided
  • 3 large white onions peeled, halved, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium red bell pepper thinly sliced in 1" strips
  • 2 pounds flank steak
  • 1 tablespoon flour all purpose
  • 2 cups milk warm
  • 10 ounces provolone cheese shredded
  • salt & pepper to taste
  • 4 soft hoagie rolls split 3/4 open

Directions:

  1. Place steak in freezer for 30 to 45 minutes to make it easier to slice thin.
  2. Heat 2 tablespoons of butter and 2 tablespoons oil in a large saute pan over medium heat.
  3. Add the onions and season with salt and pepper.
  4. Cook slowly until golden brown and caramelized, approximately 30 to 40 minutes.
  5. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in small saute pan over high heat.
  6. Add the peppers and cook until soft.
  7. Remove peppers from heat and set aside.
  8. Remove the meat from the freezer and slice very thinly.
  9. Heat griddle to high heat.
  10. Brush steak slices with remaining oil and season with salt and pepper.
  11. Cook for 45 to 60 seconds per side.
  12. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in a medium saucepan over medium heat.
  13. Whisk in the flour and cook for 1 minute.
  14. Slowly whisk in the warm milk, whisking constantly about 4 to 5 minutes.
  15. Remove the mixture from the heat and whisk in the provolone until combined.
  16. Season with salt and pepper if desired.
  17. Place several slices of the meat on the bottom half of a roll.
  18. Spoon some of the cheese sauce over the meat.
  19. Top with onions and peppers.
