I had one of these at a German Festival in South Dakota about 15 years ago. It was delicious and I could never remember what they were called until now. It was just how I remembered.

The first time I had these I was about 9 or 10 years old and my mother's friend made them. It's just one of those things that stays with you over the years, maybe it was because of the silly name. Who knows. My mother-in-law made them during one of our Christmas visits to Ohio. Why I've never thought to make them until now is beyond me.

I'm certain the only way I have ever made chili was in the Crock-Pot. I might have started with a recipe I got in 8th grade Home Economics class. Wait, did they have Crock-Pots back then? I've fine tuned this simple recipe over the past 30+ years and I have never made chili with any bean other than baked beans. Simply because I just don't like any other beans. You would be surprised, it's actually very good.

This was one of the first Crock-Pot recipes I ever made. I haven't changed it much over the past 30 years either. If it's not broke don't fix it.

I got this recipe from my Mom. It's quick, easy and goes great with a tall glass of milk. Just something about Oriental food that makes me want to have milk., perhaps it's to offset the saltiness.

This is one of my favorite cheap comfort foods. As a young adult I could eat this all week long and many times did. My mom called it American Chop Suey, I just call it Slop!

Another one of my favorite go-to comfort foods. We had this quite a bit while I was growing up. Mom's was pretty bland so I've tweaked it over the years. The orange potatoes were a pretty common thing in my house as my Mom always mashed carrots with our mashed potatoes. I'm not sure if that was her way of getting us to eat the carrots or to stretch the potatoes.
